What Are Fat Burners

Fat burners are supplements or foods that assist in burning fat. They can be an effective weight loss aid when used properly with a balanced diet and fitness plan.

You may have also heard of thermogenic fat burners. They are supplements that increase heat production in the body so that you burn more calories. There are many thermogenic supplements that contain stimulants such as caffeine. Caffeine has been reported to  help increase energy levels, suppress appetite, and burn fat. However, is this good for your health? Some side effects of too much caffeine includes the jitters, headaches, heart palpitations, and anxiety.

Natural Fat Burners

  • CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)
CLA is a fatty acid that can be found in dairy, eggs and beef. It has not only been found to reduce fat, but also increase muscle strength and exercise endurance. It helps the body convert food more efficiently into energy. Please note, however, that CLA is not a magic supplement. It does not make up for unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity.
  • Green Tea
Green Tea is one of the most well known supplements for increasing the fat burning effects of exercise. It is made up of polyphenols or catechins, better known as EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate). It promotes thermogenesis and fat oxidation which will assist in weight loss.
  • Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin which causes your body to heat up. Consuming capsaicin encourages your body to increase energy expenditure and, as a result, burn calories.
  • Cinnamon
Cinnamon contains vitamins, minerals, fiber, calcium, and iron. It has been known to regulate blood sugar levels, while increasing insulin levels. Since high blood sugar levels can lead to increased storage of fat by the body, cinnamon helps stop the increased storage of fat and enables you to lose weight, especially in the belly.
  • Protein
Protein has a thermogenic effect. Your body works harder to digest protein than carbohydrates. During this process your body needs to expend more energy and as such, burns more calories. Protein also increases satiety.

In conclusion, although the above natural fat burners may assist in weight loss, if you eat more calories than your body burns, weight gain will result. Eating at a caloric deficit will ultimately result in weight loss. (See how to calculate your maintenance caloric intake here.)

Love CLA and not a lot of people know about it. I like using it with caffeine, but it probably isn’t’ DR recommended.

Yes, I don’t think a lot of people know about it. Also, I don’t think Dr’s ever recommend ‘supplements’.
